Product reviews

Virgin Media TV Anywhere app

Published 13 May 2013 The Virgin Media TV Anywhere app for TiVo enables the user to control their TV experience in the palm of their hand. As a VoiceOver user who is not able to see the TV screen, I was really pleased with the way the app worked. I was able to access the guide, my recorded programmes and independently play a programme.

Tune in Radio (for the iPad)

Published 13 May 2013 The Tune In radio app for iOS enables the user to listen to a variety of radio stations. While the app is mostly accessible, a few issues with the labelling of buttons and the layout of the sign up screen are problematic for the app.

Blinkbox (Web and PC Version)

Published 13 May 2013 Blinkbox is an online service which enables users to rent films. The website and the installation of the blinkbox manager are accessible with JAWS. However, the presence of a 'text image' on the registration page with no audio alternative, the absence of audio description and the inaccessibility of the Flash Player let the service down.

Lovefilm Review (Web version)

Published: 23 April 2013 Lovefilm is a subscription based service that enables users to stream films and TV programmes to their PC and other devices, as well as renting DVDs and games. Overall, using the service was a positive experience, the inclusion of Audio Description in specific DVDs and the accessibility of the website made it user friendly. However, the inaccessibility of the search feature and the absence of Audio Description on the online content let the service down.

Netflix review (Web version)

Published 23 April 2013 Netflix offers subscribers the ability to watch TV programmes and films, while the flash player and website are accessible, the absence of audio described content and the fact that there are no instructions for screen reader users on how to use the flash player let the service down.

Audio Description

"Watching 'Flag of our Fathers' with audio description, I felt that I could see every bullet spitting from the machine guns, the ships approaching the beach, and every tear and facial expression... what more could you ask for!"
