Radio

Listening to the radio is a popular pastime of blind and partially sighted people. If you are an ardent listener of radio shows, you may want to learn more about:

  • DAB radio

  • Internet radio

  • Catch-up radio

DAB radio

Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) or what is commonly known as digital radio offers a wide choice of programming with more radio stations than ever before. The quality of audio is also far superior when compared to analogue radio as it gives a hiss-free sound. Today, many people are switching to digital radio across the country.

However, the introduction of new digital radio equipment poses a challenge for blind and partially sighted people especially when it comes to navigating and tuning into different stations.

See our advice on accessibility of equipment.

Internet radio

Internet radio (also known as web radio) is an audio service transmitted over the Internet. It presents listeners with a continuous stream of audio over the internet that cannot be paused or stopped, much like traditional broadcast media.

Catch-up radio

Similar to catch-up services for television programmes such as the ITV player, 4oD, today, an online catch-up radio service can be used to listen to radio shows for a fixed period after their original broadcast.

The newly launched UK based Radioplayer gives audience a chance to experience listening to radio shows online.

Insight radio

Insight radio is RNIB's radio station for people with sight problems.

You can listen:

  • online
  • via Sky Channel 0188
  • in Glasgow on 101FM
  • on freesat channel 777.
