VILD services for professionals and organisations

We have a variety of different services on offer including Assessments, Support, Training and Consultancy.

Assessment and information services

We offer a range of assessment and information services as listed below.
  • Bridge to Vision Services - working in partnership with local authorities, health boards and other voluntary agencies. Assisting the individual through the assessment process.
  • Rehabilitation and mobility services - the rehabilitation service can provide support and training with the practical tasks that become difficult as a result of being sight impaired (partially sighted) or severally sight impaired (Blind).
  • Information Service

Adult support services

  • Day support services - including on going vision assessment, facilities and activities to develop life skills and support with transition from education into adult services.
  • Outreach services - assessments can be undertaken similar to those in Day services in relation to core skills of mobility, independent living and communication. Also offers support to individuals looking towards independence, accepting responsibilities and making choices, as well as in seeking oppotunities for employment or voluntary work. Supporting inclusion by providing opportunities tomeet others and encouraging social activity development.

Children's services

  • Toy Library and Resource (Fife) - provides toys and equipment to children and young people in Fife who are affected by disabilities. Carers are supported to select appropriate equipment and to understand the value of its use.

Training

The UK Practice and Development Team provides support, advice and training for carers and professional staff who are planning and delivering services to people who have learning disabilities and sight problems.

Drawing on our experience and expertise in working with individuals who have a combination of learning disability and sight problems, our training provides an understanding of the effects of sight problems on a person's needs and behaviour.

Accredited vision assessment and learning disability training

Using RNIB's unique functional assessment tool this training will provide a structure to enable participants to identify visual problems in someone with a learning disability. This course has attained accreditation of 15 credits at level 6 on the SCQF and level 3 on NVQF.

Visual awareness and learning disability training

This training supports parents, carers, education, social and health professionals in understanding how vision impacts on the day-to-day life of the person with a learning disability and strategies to employ in the development of person-centered support and care plans.

Life Skills

This training involves practical experience of breaking down every day activities into their component parts and identifying strategies to enable people with learning disability and sight problems to address them. This training can be developed around the needs of a particular service or person with a learning disability.

Environmental awareness

This training provides practical guidance and knowledge of ways in which information about the environment can be made more accessible for people with a visual impairment and learning disability such as lighting, contrast and layout.

Play and the child

This training supports parents, carers and professionals working with children with sight problems and learning disabilities and explores the value of play in the learning process.

Advanced training

This course is designed for those who have completed an introductory visual awareness course and wish to learn more about supporting people with learning disabilities and sight problems. This could form part of their ongoing professional development.

Tailored training

We can offer tailored packages to groups of any size to meet their individual needs at a venue and time to suit. Further information is available.

Consultancy services

We can provide tailor made consultancy packages based on our specialist knowledge and skills in vision assessment, environmental assessment, training for staff, skills assessment and outreach support. We can provide support and training with the practical tasks that become difficult as a result of being sight impaired (partially sighted) or severely sight impaired (Blind).
