Career choices

Choosing career options and starting a job search can be a daunting task. There are a bewildering number of job roles in the labour market and sometimes it can be hard to know what is best for you.

Before making a career choice or starting a job search it is important to consider your interests, things you are good at, things that are important to you and what barriers you face in work. These things will help you consider what jobs might be suitable for you.

The most important thing to remember is that there is help available to you. Careers advisers are able to help people to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to match these against possible career options. You can find details of the major providers of careers services in our 'Job seeking resources' factsheet, in the employment factsheets section.

Another useful resource is a 2007 toolkit from RNIB called Job Search: The Real Story. This toolkit has a number of exercises that will help you to think about your skills, values and barriers to employers.
