About MANIL

Make a Noise in Libraries (MANIL) is now in its seventh year. This annual campaign aims to bring public libraries and blind and partially sighted people together to improve access to books and information.

Many libraries in the UK are already developing inclusive services such as reading groups, access to the internet and accessible catalogues. RNIB provides support and encouragement for those libraries that wish to do more.

For their part, blind and partially sighted people are encouraged to visit their local library to find out what is available. By speaking up about their needs, they can help to make libraries more aware of the demand for accessible library services.

Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight is run by the RNIB National Library Service, which provides a wide range of books and information for children and adults in a choice of formats including braille, Moon, giant print (24 point type) and unabridged audio (DAISY Talking Books).

MANIL 2008 summary

Over 300 UK libraries supported Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight from 7 to 20 July 2008. Many linked their activities with 2008 National Year of Reading and used the July theme of rhythm and rhyme. Poetry proved especially popular and several events featured music. Other successful activities included reading groups, storytime sessions for blind and partially sighted children, oral history recording sessions and guest speakers from BBC Audio and WF Howes.

In addition, many libraries organised displays of audio books and other accessible materials to promote their services to blind and partially sighted people, families and carers.

In return, RNIB provided free posters, bookmarks, themed book lists and other promotional support and practical advice.

Mary’s story – Mary joined a Telephone Book Club and meets new people over the phone who share her passion. "I live alone. I’ve always been quite active but suddenly I find that I’m not. Reading is my biggest pleasure, I’ve read all my life. The group is very good if you live alone. You get to know other people." Mary’s full story.
