The total number of people registered blind and partially sighted and the number of new registrations is one of the most important datasets available to the sight loss sector.
We use the figures for the Sight Loss Data Tool, for social survey sampling, and to encourage local authorities to deliver vision rehabilitation services.
But earlier this year NHS Digital proposed to stop triennial publication of registration figures for England. In June, ESI submitted a consultation response to defend the publication - and we've now received confirmation that our defence was successful.
NHS Digital say: “The data are considered a very valuable resource and there is no known alternative source. The data are not only used in their published form but are used in other products, one example being that the data are incorporated into a national tool having thousands of downloads.”
Their reference to the Sight Loss Data Tool indicates that our response was a major influence on the decision.
