Psychology of colour

For some people, colour has a significant place in their lives. There are psychological associations related to colour and this can vary from culture to culture. Design and advertising take advantage of this to create moods and atmosphere. Doctors' surgeries are often decorated with blue or green as these are said to be calming colours, whilst casinos often display red light as this is seen as a more stimulating colour.

Generally in Western culture:

  • White is a symbol of purity, innocence, neutrality, emptiness and the unknown.
  • Red symbolises energy, warmth, passion and joy along with danger, violence and anger.
  • Orange symbolises extroversion, excitement and activity along with pushiness.
  • Yellow is said to symbolise sun, light, optimism and freshness along with arrogance, egoism and lies.
  • Green is said to symbolise freshness, stamina, relaxation and nature along with laziness and indecision.
  • Blue symbolises relaxation, trust, friendliness, harmony and calm along with cold, dreaminess and melancholy.
  • Indigo symbolises intuition, fearlessness and faithfulness along with intolerance and judgementalism.
  • Violet is a symbol of mystery and extravagance along with conflict.
  • Black is said to symbolise darkness and functionality, pessimism and hopelessness.
  • Grey is said to indicate seriousness and objectivity, along with negativity and coldness.
