Employing someone with sight problems

Employers and employment professionals

Two-thirds of registered blind and partially sighted people are not in work.

In addition, 27 per cent of registered blind and partially sighted people surveyed, who were not in work, said that the main reason for leaving their last job was the onset of sight loss or deterioration of their sight.

But it doesn't have to be like this. Sight loss should not equal job loss.

Advances in technology mean that visually impaired people can now overcome many of the barriers to work that they faced in the past, and government schemes like Access to Work mean that many of the costs can be met.

If you are an employer, we can help you retain a current employee who is losing their sight, and we can help you to take on someone who is visually impaired. We can also provide help and advice to employment professionals who work with blind and partially sighted people.

In this section you will find research and evidence outlining the issue, the current legal duties of employers, as well as solutions to the challenges posed by visual impairment.
