Insight magazine issue 45: Images of blind children in the media
May/June 2013
We set out to ask how young blind and partially sighted people are portrayed on TV, radio and film, and it turns out that they are all but invisible. Our Guest Editor, Damon Rose, is blind and works as a broadcaster and writer. He writes from the heart about how the lack of credible role models affected him.
Charities sometimes use images of blind children in their media messages. We look at a very positive example of this, when a YouTube video of a blind child led to a media storm and raised awareness of a rare eye condition. We go behind the scenes of Something Special, the hit CBeebies show with disabled children as the stars. And finally, a young, blind radio presenter explains how she got into her exciting line of work.
