NB readers urged to donate items to Ethiopia

An appeal has been launched to provide equipment for blind and partially sighted people for schools and colleges in Ethiopia.

Canes, books, screen readers and Braille typewriters are some of the items wanted by astrophysicist Wanda Diaz, who is leading the appeal.

Diaz, who is blind, recently returned from a trip to Ethiopia and launched the appeal after meeting a teacher who runs a college for blind and partially sighted young people.

She is hoping NB readers can donate screen readers, clocks and styluses for use across the country.

"Lots of people who are blind are hidden from society, but when you show them that you can contribute to society then they become so happy," she explained.

Diaz, pictured, will be returning to Ethiopia in December.
