A nurse has scooped an award for contributing to a project aimed at educating health professionals in developing countries.
Janet Marsden, Professor of Ophthalmology and Emergency Care was awarded the RCN/ Novartis Ophthalmic Nursing Award.
Marsden, pictured, who is based at Manchester Metropolitan University, said the initiative would help provide current and relevant information to help ophthalmic nurses update and develop their practice.
The project includes teaching sessions that have been all been designed, researched, tested and proofread to ensure they are fit for purpose in various formats.
Ophthalmic nurses in the developed world already have resources to help them learn and keep up to date, but those in less privileged areas are often unable to find information to help them in their practice.
Many textbooks and journals are often too expensive, and most are in English. Not all nurses will have access to the internet and online resources can be of variable quality. This project aims to redress some of these issues.
A group of ophthalmic nurses who work and volunteer with the international charity, ORBIS developed the range of resources which have been translated by ophthalmic nurses into their first language.
The project is ongoing and the resources are being used internationally.
