Patient focus is the first ever guide jointly produced by Action for Blind People, The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and Royal National Institute of the Blind, the three leading sight loss charities in the UK. It is a 24 page illustrated leaflet, published in April 2005.
Who should read this guide?
Patient focus should be read by anyone who comes into contact with patients and visitors with sight problems in a medical or therapeutic setting.
Why should you read this guide?
Having a health check or seeing a medical practitioner can be a time of anxiety for anyone. People with sight problems may have additional concerns - how to get to the appointments, were to go on arrival and what will happen during the consultation.
Staff awareness is key to ensuring that people with sight problem have a positive experience during their visit.
This guide is intended to increase understanding of some of the issues involved. It also gives practical advice on how to cater for the needs of your blind and partially sighted visitors.
What is covered?
Packed with expert guidance on best practice for providing services to people with sight problems, the advice follows the patient journey:
-
corresponding with your patients
-
travelling to and arriving at an appointment
-
reception and waiting area
-
the consultation
-
inpatient care
-
medication and information for aftercare.
-
There is also a special section covering the needs of children, patients with guide dogs and deafblind people.
The booklet concludes with a section on where to obtain further information.
