Access to museums, galleries and heritage collections
We can help you work towards inclusion and access to museums, galleries and heritage collections for the two million people in the UK with sight loss. RNIB offers one day courses to support your organisation to make your buildings and collections accessible.
Changing your approach can increase visitor numbers and will benefit all who visit. The course is an inspiring, fun and welcome opportunity for staff to learn and develop their own in house approaches to engaging and welcoming more blind and partially sighted visitors.
The morning is structured around understanding and gaining confidence in moving your organisation and individual perspective forward. The afternoon is a chance to begin to develop an action plan and a structured way to more inclusive practise for all your visitors.
Participant: "I found it really useful to learn that to talk about a museum or gallery building and environment can be an important part of the visit rather than just to describe the artwork or objects."
Learning objectives
At the end of the training delegates will be able to:
-
describe what it means to people to live with sight loss
-
demonstrate the confidence and skills to use appropriate etiquette in meeting, greeting and guiding blind and partially sighted people
-
identify methods by which museum, gallery and heritage buildings can be made more inclusive for all people
-
use appropriate approaches to describe images and objects to blind and partially sighted people.
Participant: "Touch tours were a revelation to me as were the preparations for the Tactile Images."
In addition to a varied programme of discussions and hands-on activities, delegates will benefit from networking with staff of other museums, galleries and heritage venues.
Course presenter: RNIB's Cultural and Inclusion Arts Development Officer
