Adobe InDesign is a comprehensive, professional desktop publishing package and as such is capable of producing eBook files which make full use of the accessibility features inherent in the format. For example, such files will support font selection and resizing, text reflow and document navigation depending on the reading device used.
The latest version of Adobe InDesign (currently CS 6.0) offers additional features to make the production of EPUB and accessible PDF files a much more straightforward and efficient process. A freely available plug-in from Amazon also allows the direct export of Kindle eBooks.
eBook export
Since InDesign CS 5.5 new features have been available to aid the production of EPUB and accessible PDF files. These features combine to offer significant advantages over previous versions of InDesign in terms of eBook production. InDesign CS 6.0 is now capable of producing both EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 eBooks.
Earlier versions of InDesign generally required some manual editing of the EPUB files in order to obtain a satisfactory result. The older the version of InDesign used, the greater the likely need for manual editing of exported files.
The improvements and changes made to InDesign make upgrading from previous versions to the latest version a very worthwhile proposition for any serious application of the export to eBook or accessible PDF options.
