Introduction to access consultancy

Overview and objectives

The National Register of Access Consultants (NRAC) is an independent register of accredited Access Auditors and Access Consultants who meet professional standards and criteria established by a peer review system. This course will help you on your journey to becoming an NRAC accredited auditor or consultant, or integrating inclusive design into your current work.

It is designed to enable you to assess the accessibility of buildings in effective and appropriate ways.

Aim of the course

To enable you to assess the accessibility of buildings in effective and appropriate ways.

In two days, no-one can train you to become an access auditor but we can:

  • Provide an outline of the key issues for those considering access consultancy as a career
  • Enable practising auditors to update their skills.

Modules for this course

This workshop includes the following modules:

Design and Disability

Review the disabling environment based on the social model of disability. Learn about the access and design implications of a range of physical and sensory impairments.

The Legislative Framework

A review of the access implications flowing from the Equality Act 2010.

Principles into Practice

Discover how to apply access guidelines, key elements and dimensions. Consider external environments and approach to the building, circulation within the building, facilities (including toilet provision), fixtures, fittings and finishes.

The Audit and Appraisal Process

Learn about the audit brief and obtaining quality and consistency in audits.

Case Studies

Participate in practical exercises to consider and apply your learning from this course.

Action Planning

An opportunity for you to consider how you will use this training in your own work.
