Transport and travel

Make a move in the right direction...

Blind and partially sighted people tell us they still have difficulty using our transport services.

We are continuing to work with transport providers and people with sight loss to give more people the confidence to use public transport. Our work also involves working with blind and partially sighted people to help them find out what services are available and to give them the confidence to use transport services.

Transport makes an enormous difference to our everyday lives. Everything from employment to shopping involves getting out of the home and travelling, whether it's to the end of the street or the other end of the country.

While a lot of work has been done since the introduction of disability legislation in 1995, there is still more to do to make sure everyone has access to this vital public service. Work with us to help make sure your customers know what you can do for them and to find out if what else you can do to help your passengers to make journeys safely and independently.

Can you help us?

We're working on a number of new projects and would love to hear from you if you think you can help.

Wayfinding solutions

We've been compiling information and reviewing existing innovative solutions and research. Now our team are starting to work on potential pilot systems. So if you're involved in GPS, talking signs, smartphone apps, new ticketing solutions, or any products or research in this field then please get in touch with RNIB Innovation and Development:

Promoting best practice

We don't have all the answers for what needs doing to make transport accessible. Our experts do know how to improve the design of our train stations, how to make RTI signs talk and produce accessible documents for you. But there is much more we'd like to know about you, your problems and your solutions.

Over the next few years, we will continue to work with the transport industry. We want to explore what you already do that's great and what needs to be done. Through this partnership, we'd like to be open about the barriers that you and your customers are facing to find practical solutions that will make a real difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

We've already identified some innovative and warmly welcomed initiatives at Southern as well as Brighton and Hove. Let us know if you want to be added to this growing list!
