On the weekend of 11 February, software developers are meeting together in London to recognise the accessibility challenges faced everyday by visually impaired users. The aim of the event is to raise awareness amongst developers of both today's and tomorrow's everyday software.
Hackathon?
Some readers may be unfamiliar with the term 'hackathon', far from the industrial espionage or technical misdeeds media has often associated with the term hacker, within the software industry the term is instead seen as a badge of merit.
Within the hacker community a hack is recognised as the playful embodiment of ingenuity. A hackathon is an event where an eclectic mix of developers get together and create new hacks!
Usually these events are all night affairs fuelled by the excitement of working with peers to develop new and exciting projects.
Accessibility is taking centre stage at the event is a topic often forgotten during the development of software products.
Often the when developers recognise where access issues occur this can lead to far reaching technological improvements for everyone in future!
