Talk and Support
RNIB Talk and Support run telephone social groups for adults with sight loss. You can take part from the comfort of your own home using a landline phone.
What types of group do you offer?
We offer two types of groups:
- our Telebefriending groups help you to socialise by phone for friendship and support in small groups of blind and partially sighted people – completely free of charge!
- our popular Telephone Book Clubs join people with sight loss together by phone to discuss books and reading.
To join a group, please email firstname.lastname@example.org, or call us on either 0845 330 3723 or 020 7391 2218.
For emotional support groups facilitated by a telephone counsellor, please contact our Emotional Support Service.
How do the groups work?
We match like minded people together for general conversations as part of our award winning Telebefriending groups. For people with an interest in discussing books we have our Telephone Book Club service.
When your group is due to meet we call you and transfer you to your telephone group. Our groups are hosted by friendly volunteers who will be waiting to greet you. There is no charge to you for the cost of the service. Groups meet together on a regular day and time.
Once everyone in the group is connected, the volunteer host will help the group to chat together and keep the conversation flowing. Adults of all ages from across the UK are welcome to join the service.
What you need to take part
You don't need any special equipment to take part in our telephone groups. All you need is a landline telephone and somewhere quiet and comfortable whilst you take part.
Unfortunately mobile phones are not permitted due to the higher call charges and disruption to the sound quality for the rest of the group.
We have lots of people who successfully take part in our groups who have difficulties with hearing. If you use a hearing aid or amplified phone then please call us to discuss if you have any concerns.
Right now we can only reach one in three of the people who need our help most. Please make a donation and help us support more blind and partially sighted people.Donate now
