The history of NB magazine
NB was launched by the National Institute for the Blind in 1917, with information for teachers and care workers supporting blind and partially sighted people, including those who had lost their sight in the First World War.
For almost a hundred years, the magazine has been a monthly source of information and inspiration for professionals supporting people with sight loss, and a lively and influential forum for discussion on all the issues that concern them.
Initially called The Beacon and later New Beacon, NB's wide range of readers include rehabilitation workers, social workers and other care professionals, ophthalmic nurses, orthoptists, eye clinic liaison officers, local society staff, support groups - and, of course, blind and partially sighted people themselves.
