Care at RNIB Pears Centre
Specialist care at RNIB Pears Centre is graded “Outstanding” by Ofsted
This is available to blind and partially sighted children and young people with multiple disabilities and complex health needs from pre-school age, whether or not they attend our school.
Supporting children’s development and wellbeing
We offer the following specialist care services to children and young people:
- up to 52-week residential care
- therapies and healthcare
- nursing care for children with additional medical needs
- short breaks and respite care.
Children and young people attending RNIB Pears Centre are encouraged to make their own everyday choices and develop independence skills. We work closely with parents, carers and families to ensure they are involved at each step of their child's journey.
We promote achievement in personal development, independence, communication, mobility and socialisation. Our transition service ensures that all young people attending Pears Centre get the very best start to their adult life. We are able to help with transitions to other establishments, such as RNIB College Loughborough, or into supported living accommodation.

Our specialist care and therapy team
24-hour care is provided by our dedicated team of social care workers (including waking night staff). Our staffing structure ensures that individual needs of children and young people are met at all times. Between the hours of 7am and 10pm the ratio is at least:
- two staff for one to two children
- three staff for three to four children
- and four staff for five to six children.
Every night, two social care professionals are on duty in each bungalow, with supervision from a night team leader.
In-house healthcare and therapy professionals
Children and young people are supported by in-house therapists, nurses and healthcare consultants. Our on-site team includes behaviour specialists trained in the care of people with learning disabilities, habilitation/mobility specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.
We also commission clinical psychology services and sensory therapists to support our work with children and young people and assure clinical governance.
Nursing care for children with additional medical needs
5 Pears Court is run as a high dependency service for children with additional medical needs and is supported by a 24-hour nursing team.
All our nursing staff are appropriately qualified to provide care to ventilated children and receive clinical supervision and training through agreements with the NHS Complex Care Team. We are working towards compliance with the latest NHS Standard for Ventilated Children.
Short breaks and respite care
We offer short break stays, in current bungalows, to a discrete group of children and young people where vacancies and compatibility with other young people allow. This service is provided by individual agreement with the local authority.
Short breaks can be from one overnight stay up to two-week holidays and are available all year round, including:
- during school holidays and term breaks
- after school.
