The book is a satire on corruption. Mr Nanga, a Nigerian politician, is a comic portrait of a fraudulent, ambitious, demagogic universal charmer. Set against him is the uncorrupted, sensual, self-inquiring young narrator Odili. The book reveals how perilously close Odili comes to showing the same qualities as Mr Nanga.
