This map gives a good overview of the railway system of Britain by detailing the principle passenger railway lines. It does not mention all the stations that are on these principle routes nor does it give all the railway lines and stations on the British railway network. The areas not covered in detail by this map are: the London area; the Liverpool/Leeds/Manchester/Sheffield area; the Glasgow/Edinburgh area; the Birmingham/West Midlands area; and the Cardiff/Bristol area. The map has been divided geographically into five volumes. Volume one covers Scotland, volume two covers the north of England, volume three covers the Midlands and East Anglia, volume four covers Wales and south-west England, and volume five covers south-east England including the Isle of Wight. Each volume has the following: a simplified map of Britain showing how the country has been divided into the various regions; an overview map of the area covered by the volume; details of how the area covered by the volume is broken down into the detailed facing and single pages; a key to the symbols used throughout the detailed maps; and finally the detailed maps themselves followed immediately by their key pages (map, key, map, key etc). Some geographical information has been added to the detailed maps to help with location identification, e.g. town names, coastal features.
