Each year at Christmas, Joe writes a letter to Santa. But they've had a few misunderstandings in the past. Last year, Joe wanted a fire-engine-red racecar with retracting headlights, and he did get one - but it was only three inches long. So this year Joe is really, really careful. He describes exactly what he wants - and on Christmas morning, guess what's waiting for him under the tree!
Santa has brought him a living, breathing, black-and-white penguin named Osbert. Osbert is a delightful companion, but providing what his new friend needs to thrive turns out to be more than Joe bargained for. In the bath Osbert unwraps all the soap to replicate icebergs; for breakfast he demands herring; and when playing in the freezing snow outside, Osbert is never ready to go inside to get warm. Will anything in Joe's life ever be the same?

Extract from the book
So, this year, I was really really careful. I wrote Santa a long letter and told him that I would like to have my own pet penguin. Not a stuffed penguin, but a real one, from Antarctica. I told him my penguin should be one foot tall, white and black with a yellow beak, and his name should be Osbert. I included a drawing. I put extra postage on the envelope and sent it off a whole month early. Then I waited.
