Good Design
There are two million people with sight problems in the UK. Good design of environments, products and services can improve accessibility for all disabled people.
An inclusive approach to design is both practical and achievable. Accessibility does not just affect people with disabilities, it has enormous benefits and rewards for everyone. Our consultancy services are geared towards improving accessibility for all.
RNIB Access Consultancy Services
RNIB's new Access Consultancy Services aims to help create an inclusive society through improved access for disabled people to physical environments, signage, websites, information and products.
The new service combines the talents of JMU Access Partnership, the Web Access Centre and other related services to provide clients with a one-stop shop for improving accessibility.
Use the links below to see how we aim to help create an inclusive society in each area.
Accessible environments (formerly JMU) - access to buildings, streets, transport and signage. We provide access audits, design appraisals, expert design advice and input to access statements, plans or strategies. We also provide expert signage consultancy and the RNIB React electronic wayfinding device.
Tactile images and maps - access to images and maps, including large static maps, portable maps and images. We provide advice, site visits, design and production.
Web Access Centre - access to websites. We provide a range of website accessibility audits and consultancy advice to the main international standards including the award of the RNIB accessible website logo.
Products - access to mainstream and care products. We provide a full assessment service to help manufacturers design inclusive products. Our unique RNIB Reference can be awarded for products that meet our requirements.
Training - introductory courses on disability or visual awareness and a range of technical courses on buildings, streets, websites, products and tactile images and maps.
Information - a range of services and resources to help you improve access to customer information. This includes the See it Right book which contains advice on producing accessible print information, details of producing audio and braille information, and guidelines on using common software packages accessibly.
Publications - we publish a range of publications covering buildings, signage, offices, housing and accessible information. All are available from our online shop. We also produce a range of technical fact sheets and Access, our quarterly inclusive design journal.

An eye test detected the condition and he was sent to casualty where he was given further tests and eye drops to relieve the pressure. “ My vision has not improved but now it won’t deteriorate any further. This has made me feel very lucky – if I hadn’t gone for that eye test, I’d be blind by now.” Open Your Eyes campaign
