Summary: Frequently asked questions about RNIB campaigns

Why isn’t RNIB campaigning on my issue?

Our annual campaign priorities are agreed and planned a long time ahead of when they are launched. We can only respond to a certain number of issues on top of these priorities at any one time.

What can I do about a situation I am unhappy with?

If you are unhappy about something it is always a good idea to contact your MP. They can advise on national government policy or local issues that you want help with.

Where can I get information on the Disability Discrimination Act and what I can do if I have been discriminated against?

RNIB has a Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) legal team who can advise you about your rights under the DDA, provide information and model letters to write to service providers who have discriminated against you. If they think you have a clear case they can provide legal representation if you wish to take a DDA case.

Why doesn’t RNIB merge with Guide Dogs for the Blind?

Guide Dogs for the Blind deals with issues specific to Guide Dog users. They train dogs and users. RNIB is an organisation of blind and partially sighted people who may or may not be guide dog users. We campaign on issues across the board that are of concern to blind and partially sighted people in their everyday lives. These are two separate agendas that two organisations can sustain.

Jenny's story - Jenny Burgess volunteered for a disability support group run by people with physical disabilities. She was the only staff member with a sight problem. “I depended on a colleague with physical disabilities to give me a lift to work. I have far greater mobility problems than most people with physical disabilities who can drive a car, yet receive less benefit - it’s unfair and unjust.” Join our campaign to make the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance fair - taken for a ride.
