Playaway audio books to give away

Have you listened to any Playaway audio books? Would you like to try one out?

Thanks to the organisers at the National Year of Reading, we have 40 Playaways (various fiction titles) to give away to RNIB National Library Service readers in return for your feedback.

A Playaway is an audiobook player containing a full length book, so you can listen to your favourite reads anywhere, any time, any place. All you have to do is press play to start listening immediately - there is no need for a separate player, it's small enough to fit in your pocket and it comes with headphones and a battery. Playaways can be purchased online and from some book shops, and some public libraries stock them too.

We would be very interested to know what you think of the Playaway. Is it easy to use? Did you find the features accessible? Would you consider using one again?

We only have a limited number of Playaways to give away, so if you'd like to try one, please contact Una Regan on 0161 355 2079 or email una.regan@rnib.org.uk First come, first served.

Once you've finished listening to your Playaway, you can pass it on to a friend or return it to the RNIB National Library Service so that we can give someone else a chance to use it.

Books of the month

Here are some ghoulish choices to celebrate Halloween:

  • Classic Chilling Tales by Ambrose Bierce (TB 15683)
From a fearful beast to a murderous obsession, from the fear of an invisible presence to malevolent magic, these chilling tales written by masters of the genre, contain all manner of disconcerting phenomena that will linger in the mind long after the final word is spoken.
  • Ghost stories by M.R. James (braille 11v)
Thirty-one classic ghost stories from the haunting world of M.R. James. Settings include English country houses and gardens, the churchyard, the yew maze, and an unforgettable train journey.
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (Giant Print 1v, braille 6v, TB 8912)
Frankenstein is a young, idealistic student of natural philosophy who, finding the secret of giving life to matter, creates a living being. The monstrous creation, though gentle in nature, inspires fear in those who meet him and must hide away from society.
