Are you passionate about reading? Would you like to share your enthusiasm with others and discover new authors? Do you find it hard to get hold of books in the right reading format?

If so, why not join one of our Telephone Book Clubs for people with sight loss!

About the Book Clubs

The Book Clubs are made up of small groups of people getting together over the phone for a chat about all kinds of books and reading in general. All from the comfort of their homes!

  • The Book Clubs run in six monthly cycles.
  • They take place once a month.
  • There are no more than eight people per group so you will all get the chance to contribute regularly to the discussions.
  • It costs £12 for six sessions - that’s just £2 per session!
  • We ring you so there are no other costs involved.
  • The groups are facilitated by our friendly and highly trained volunteers.

You will choose two books to read or listen to as a group from a selection of different books on the bestseller book list. You will discuss these books during a couple of sessions.

There will be the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker. One of our guest speakers was an author who talked about writing and getting her books published. Another was from RNIB Talking Books explaining how books are chosen for recording and the importance of casting the right person to read the book onto CD.

You will also be able to exchange recommendations for different books to read by authors you might not have discovered and chat generally about reading with sight loss.

Our Right to Read campaign is fighting against the book famine for blind and partially sighted people. A shocking 96 per cent of books are not available in large print, audio or braille.

Jill's story - Jill lost her sight 12 years ago at the age of 19. “The experience left me feeling isolated. I often felt like my life was pointless." Now, as a presenter on Insight Radio, she uses her experiences to help others. “My prayer is that what we do helps those who are going through sight loss. Even the tiniest piece of information can make a huge difference. If my show can help do that, then my journey has not been in vain.” Jill's full story
