Introducing Read On

In Read On, we tell you about the services and books on offer from the Library and we’ll also bring you information about events and exciting new developments. Most importantly, we’d love to hear from you about what you like and don’t like about books, reading or the Library.

Latest issue - Summer 2008

Welcome to the summer edition of Read On.

"Everything starts with reading" according to the National Year of Reading 2008 website. As part of this UK-wide initiative, each month has been given a reading "theme". In line with this, Read On takes a look at "Reading escapes", the theme for June; "Rhythm and rhyme", the theme for July; as well as the sporty theme of "Read the game" to coincide with the Olympics in August.

As summer approaches and the days get longer, what better time to get out and about? To whet your appetite, we’ve included information about book-related events being held around the country throughout the coming months.

We also meet Julian Fellowes, actor, author and Chairman of RNIB's Talking Books appeal. Find out which five books he would take to a desert island and why he describes reading as "one of life's great pleasures and freedoms".

And if you're not planning to escape on holiday this year, why not escape with a book? We have plenty of ideas, news and reviews to inspire you to try reading something a little bit different this summer, whether that's a novel, poem or play.

Happy summer reading!

Mary’s story – Mary joined a Telephone Book Club and meets new people over the phone who share her passion. "I live alone. I’ve always been quite active but suddenly I find that I’m not. Reading is my biggest pleasure, I’ve read all my life. The group is very good if you live alone. You get to know other people." Mary’s full story.
