These are a series of information sheets about technology for blind and partially sighted people.

The information sheets that we can provide include:

Developing keyboard skills

This page contains various methods of developing keyboard skills using computer based programs. It also highlights other keyboard skills that can be developed such as using keystroke combinations instead of using a mouse.

How do I produce braille and tactile images?

This page explains how paper braille output is obtained from a PC and describes the features of braille embossers and braille translation packages. It also contains information about how to produce tactile images.

Notetaking

This page describes a number of portable electronic notetakers with speech and / or braille output. It also provides information about portable tape cassette, digital recorders and speech based organisers.

Training

This page describes some sources for training. Details of self-training material, training establishments and freelance trainers are given.

Using a computer with low vision

This page describes ways of accessing a computer if you have low vision. It looks at ways of enlarging the text on the screen using the operating system, screen magnification software and making use of large monitors and other adaptations.

Using a computer without vision

This page highlights products that enable a blind person to use a computer by hearing in electronic speech what is displayed on the screen or read it as braille on a braille display.

Using the internet

This page looks at what the Internet is, how to get connected and some methods of accessing the web and email with access technology. It also gives some information about web accessibility.

What is an electronic reading aid?

This page explains how people with no useful vision can get access to standard print material. It also outlines the specialist and mainstream products available.

What is a video magnifier?

This page highlights video magnifiers (or CCTVs) which are a magnifying aid for people with some useful vision. Printed material and objects can be placed under a camera and the magnified image is displayed on a television screen or computer monitor.

These pages are also available in print, braille, compact or floppy disk, and as Word or text documents via email.
