Music Teachers Support Group
Summary: About our Music Teachers Support Group, including dates of meetings and joining information.
Annual General Meeting
Date of next meeting: 3 October 2008 at RNIB Judd Street.
About the group
The Music Teachers Support Group is for all music teachers working with blind and partially sighted learners of music.
The group is a way to keep in touch with current events and issues, advertise materials to share and comment on what could be done to support your students.
The group communicates via email and meets for an annual meeting in London. The annual meeting is used to discuss one or two current issues for music teachers, usually with specialist presenters, along with regular updates of other issues. Notes from the meetings are distributed through the email group.
Background
The Music Teachers Support Group, Support for Teachers of Visually-Impaired Pupils and Students, was formed in 1991. The group is one of the VIEW/RNIB Curriculum Groups but has always had a wider membership, and interest, than mainstream music education.
Members include instrumental teachers, and musicians working in the field (such as teachers of Braille music and musicians themselves who are blind or partially sighted). The group is especially useful for those supporting students preparing for GCSE and A level examinations in Music.

Gemma's story - while at university Gemma volunteered as an events assistant in a charity. Being partially sighted, she faced some challenges working in a paper-based office. "The positive response to me asserting my needs has helped me feel more confident about the future." Gemma is also "convinced that employers recognise work experience as essential" and saw it as a great opportunity to develop new skills. Gemma's full story
