RNIB's Emerging Strategy 2009 to 2014
Summary: About the development of the new RNIB Strategy.
Work has been underway to develop RNIB's Strategy covering 2009 to 2014. As part of this process, RNIB's Board of Trustees has suggested three areas of focus for the next five years:
- supporting independent living
- creating an inclusive society
- preventing avoidable sight loss.
As this will be our strategic direction for the next five years, it's important we get it right. Therefore, part of the work towards finalising the strategy has included consulting with key people including members, customers, trustees, staff, volunteers, key partners, and other organisations within the sector.

"It's important that our strategy is 'people-centred' and that it clearly demonstrates our goal to make a difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people." Lesley-Anne Alexander
Consultation is now closed
The consultation ran between March and May 2008 and is now closed.
Thank you to the hundreds of people who took the time to share their views with us.
We’ve begun going through all emails, phone calls and letters we received – and all the notes of the many face to face and telephone discussions we held.
It’s already clear that comments are overwhelmingly positive and it is great to see a number of people suggesting specific ways in which the strategy can be improved.
What happens next
All feedback collected through the consultation is now being collated and analysed by an external researcher to help RNIB identify themes and suggestions.
Senior managers will review the feedback during June, and start looking at what needs to change, re-drafting the strategy paper for RNIB's Board of Trustees to consider in July.
Once agreed we will be publishing the new strategy and a summary of the feedback in due course. This will be made available to anyone participating in the consultation as well as on these web pages, by email or by hard copy on request.
You can download the consultation document (Word) outlining the draft strategic priorities and goals. Consultation has now closed, but this document outlines the proposals RNIB consulted on.
Information is also available about RNIB's current strategy 2006/09.

Jill's story - Jill lost her sight 12 years ago at the age of 19. “The experience left me feeling isolated. I often felt like my life was pointless." Now, as a presenter on Insight Radio, she uses her experiences to help others. “My prayer is that what we do helps those who are going through sight loss. Even the tiniest piece of information can make a huge difference. If my show can help do that, then my journey has not been in vain.” Jill's full story
