Using the Toolbar with the Keyboard

If you are using the toolbar with a screen reader or keyboard only, please read the keyboard help page for additional information on using the toolbar with a screen reader or keyboard only.

Please Note - all features and options of the toolbar can be accessed through a single menu using the hot key Ctrl + Alt + 9. We recommend that screen reader users use this menu to operate the toolbar. A screen reader will be able to provide feedback about whether options are turned on or off etc through this menu.

Description

Toolbar Help

Links to the online help pages for the toolbar.

Toolbar Options > Enable Hot Keys

Enabling hot keys allows the toolbar to be controlled with the keyboard. If they are disabled, the toolbar can only be controlled using the mouse.

Toolbar Options > Show / Hide Hot Keys

If hot keys are shown, the number for each button will be displayed on the button itself in brackets. Hiding hot keys will mean the numbers are no longer displayed.

Toolbar Options > Show / Hide Button Icons

If button icons are shown, some buttons will use images to indicate whether they are turned on or off. If they are turned on, they will have a green arrow image on them. If they are turned off, they will have a red cross image on them. Hiding button icons will mean there are no images on any of the buttons.

JavaScript Button - Ctrl + Alt + 1

JavaScript

Use this to turn support for JavaScript on or off. You may need to turn support for JavaScript off for security reasons or to stop a page updating content automatically. If support for JavaScript is turned off, certain features of some websites may no longer function.

Styles Button - Ctrl + Alt + 2

Description

Styles

Use this to turn support for style sheets on or off. When styles are turned off, much of the visual formatting off a webpage will disappear and the page will look much plainer. The location of some items may also change and the page will read much more from top to bottom. Turning off style sheets will give you more control over the size and colour of text on a webpage through settings made in your browser.

Please Note - leaving Styles turned off can affect the display of other windows and

Dialog boxes outside of Internet Explorer that rely upon styles.

Please remember to turn styles back on before closing Internet Explorer to avoid any odd effects.

Images Button - Ctrl + Alt + 3

Images

Use this to turn images on or off. When images are turned off, they are replaced by any alternative text provided. You may wish to turn images off if you are using a screen reader or screen magnifier or if you are using a slow internet connection.

Flash Button - Ctrl + Alt + 4

Flash

Use this to turn support for Flash movies and animations on or off. You may wish to turn Flash movies and animations off if you find them distracting whilst trying to read the text content of a page.

Please note - some sites require Flash (and ActiveX) to be turned on to work properly, for example, Google Mail.

Text Size Menu

Text Size

Use this to adjust the text size on a web page. The default size is medium. Other choices available are Larger, Largest, Small and Smallest. Changing the text size will increase or decrease the size of text on all web pages viewed.

Custom Styles Menu

The custom styles menu has a number of pre-defined style sheets that can be used to change the default look and feel of a webpage. This includes changing the colours used and removing images etc. For more detailed information on each style sheet that is available, please read the custom style information page.

A brief explanation of each custom style is given here:

Function

Description

Custom Styles > Giant High Contrast (B / W)

Text size is changed to very large. Text is black on a white background.

Custom Styles > Giant High Contrast (Y / B)

Text size is changed to very large. Text is yellow on a black background.

Custom Styles > Green Text, Black Background

Text size remains the same but text colour is changed to green. The background colour is black.

Custom Styles > Brown Text, Cream Background

Text size remains the same but text colour is changed to dark brown. The background colour is cream.

Custom Styles > Low Contrast (No Images)

Text size remains the same but text colour is changed to light blue. The background colour is white. All images are removed completely (no alternative text is displayed).

Custom Styles > Large Text

Text size is set to large. Colours are unchanged.

Custom Styles > Small Text

Text size is set to small. Colours are unchanged.

Custom Styles > Flexible Text

This style overrides the text size set on the website and allows your preferred size set through the browser to be applied.

Custom Styles > Browser Background, Dark Text

Text is set to a dark colour which will show up well against any light background colour set through the browser.

Custom Styles > Browser Background, Light Text

Text is set to a light colour which will show up well against any dark background colour set through the browser.

Custom Styles > Normal Style

Normal Style displays web pages as they were designed to look originally.

Options Menu

This menu allows you to quickly open some of the option screens in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Windows.

Function

Description

Internet Options Dialog

This allows you to configure general options for Internet Explorer including setting your home page and adjusting your font and colour preferences. This screen also allows you to set your security and connection options.

Accessibility Dialog

This allows you to adjust some of the accessibility features of Internet Explorer including overriding the colours, fonts and font sizes that have been specified on a web page. If these are overridden, your personal choices will be applied to the page.

Accessibility Control Panel

This opens up the Windows Accessibility Control Panel which allows you to choose options to make your computer easier to use. These changes apply to your whole computer, not just Internet Explorer. There are options to adjust how your keyboard, sound, display and mouse work.
