Workshop sessions
Software tools for dyslexic learners – full day
This workshop will provide professionals in education with some insight into the barriers faced by dyslexic learners, and offer an overview of software and hardware designed to help learners and those teaching and supporting them. Experts in this field from AbilityNet and Iansyst will demonstrate and compare some of the leading commercial, free and low cost applications, as well as showing how standard computers can be tweaked for better accessibility.
Testing your website: is it accessible? – full day
In this workshop, we will cover different ways of testing websites for accessibility, take a look at some of the free and inexpensive tools available to test your website for accessibility, and work through a range of simple techniques for testing specific issues on individual web pages. This workshop is aimed at web designers and developers, and anyone who is responsible for managing or maintaining a website.
Web 2.0 and Screen Readers: Challenges, Solutions, and the Future – half day
The increasing use of rich internet application (RIA) technologies such as AJAX and custom controls pose considerable challenges to vision impaired users of assistive technology. What are the software vendors doing to make RIA accessible? Are there methods that developers can use to improve the user experience? This workshop will demonstrate key issues and explore methods to overcome them.
Transitioning your website from WCAG 1.0 to 2.0. – half day
This workshop will be looking at ways that websites that have been built to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0) can smoothly transition to WCAG 2.0. Looking at differences and amendments to the guidelines, explain conformance under WCAG 2.0, what the benefits of transitioning are as well as review tools and resources to help you manage the transition of your website.
Exploring Disabled People’s Access To Your Call Centre – half day
Many people who are Deaf, Deafened, Speech Impaired and Deaf Blind use textphones (Minicoms) as their primary method of telephone communication. This workshop, hosted by RNID Typetalk, The National Telephone Relay Service, will examine the problems text users can have accessing call centres and take a look at some straightforward solutions including RNID Typetalk’s network based services and some new technology available for call centres. Suggestions from the audience, demonstrations and hands-on experience as well as answering “FAQs” will feature strongly in this important workshop.

Sue's story - In her 30s, Sue went to A&E after her cat scratched her eye. The doctor advised that she was at risk of contracting glaucoma and should have yearly eye tests once 40. At 50 she was referred to a consultant who diagnosed glaucoma. She has now received successful treatment and her sight has not been affected. Sue's full story.
