Conference: Great Expectations - Pathways to literacy for blind and partially sighted children

Wednesday 12 November 2008 - Stockport, Greater Manchester

2008 is the National Year of Reading. How much do children with visual impairment have to celebrate in this vital area of their education?

The Great Expectations conference provides an important opportunity to evaluate established policies and practice in the light of new research, changing pupil needs and developments in technology.

Speakers include Lord Adonis (Department for Education and Skills), Professor Cay Holbrook (University of British Columbia), Liz Twist (National Foundation for Educational Research) and Dr Graeme Douglas (University of Birmingham).

Places cost £130 per person including lunch and refreshments. For further details and an application form, please email children@rnib.org.uk.

All Aboard - conferences for teaching assistants

All Aboard: How teaching assistants can promote the learning and participation of blind and partially sighted children are two one-day conferences. They're aimed at all teaching assistants (TAs) supporting the educational needs of a child or young person with a visual impairment.

Each day includes a mixture of plenary addresses and practical workshops. We hope the events will also be helpful to those who have undertaken specialist courses such as RNIB’s Partners in Learning.

All Aboard: Mainstream will look at issues facing TAs working with pupils whose visual impairment is their main disability.
Friday 14 November 2008 – London

All Aboard: Special will consider the particular issues facing TAs supporting children with little or no sight and additional needs.
Thursday 5 February 2009 – Leeds

Places cost £90 per day. For further details and an application form, please email children@rnib.org.uk.

Gemma's story - while at university Gemma volunteered as an events assistant in a charity. Being partially sighted, she faced some challenges working in a paper-based office. "The positive response to me asserting my needs has helped me feel more confident about the future." Gemma is also "convinced that employers recognise work experience as essential" and saw it as a great opportunity to develop new skills. Gemma's full story
