National courses
These short courses are delivered by known experts in their respective fields. They cover a range of key themes to which we believe people working in the field should have access and place at a number of locations in order to maximise their accessibility.
We are pleased to advise that our national programme for 2009-2010 has now been published. Upcoming courses are:
- Visual conditions in early childhood - presented by Louise Allen and Chris Timms on 8 October 2009, Bristol and 28 January 2010, Nottingham.
- Reading difficulties in braille readers - presented by Natasha Coppins, Alice Chenneour Randall and Claire Wilson on 12 October 2009, London and 9 December 2009, Leeds.
- Learning together: developing mutual understanding using touch, sound, gesture and the Cannan Barrie 'on body' signs - presented by Mary Lee on 9 November 2009, Liverpool and 15 March 2010, Birmingham.
- Learners who have multi-sensory impairment: the forgotten senses of balance and pressure - presented by David Brown in Cardiff, London, Stockport and Peterborough between 25 November and 2 December 2009.

Conferences
- All Aboard: How teaching assistants can promote the learning and participation of blind and partially sighted children
Mainstream: Thursday 19 November 2009 - Stockport
Special: Tuesday 2 February 2010 – London. - Transitions into adulthood for young people with sight problems and complex needs - Tuesday 27 April 2010, Peterborough.
- Read the feedback received from Conference: Great Expectations - Pathways to literacy for blind and partially sighted children which took place on Wednesday 12 November 2008 in Stockport.
Regional courses

Longer training courses
The following training courses are accredited as a BTEC Advanced Certificate at level 3:
- Certificate in Grade 2 English Braille – closing date for next intake 16 September 2009. Apply now!
- Partners in Learning: accredited course for teaching assistants – a new online / blended study route developed by the Open University is currently being piloted. We are now collating applications for course groups to start in January 2010.

Gemma's story - while at university Gemma volunteered as an events assistant in a charity. Being partially sighted, she faced some challenges working in a paper-based office. "The positive response to me asserting my needs has helped me feel more confident about the future."
