What sort of online reference services are available?
The National Library Service provides access to a range of online reference services:
- KnowUK: an online reference service featuring UK related information
- NewsUK: an online news service
- Credo Reference (formerly Xreferplus): a subject based online reference service
- UK Reference Centre: a searchable archive of newspapers and magazines.
How can I get the online reference services?
Online reference services are available when you join the Library or join the Talking Book Service just call 0845 762 6843 or 01733 37 53 50 (some callers may find it cheaper to call a landline, so we have detailed both 08 prefixed numbers and landline equivalents where available) or email cservices@rnib.org.uk. We will send you an identification (ID) number and further instructions.
If you are already a Library or Talking Book member please call 0161 355 2051 or email simon.morgan@rnib.org.uk
Entering your ID number
Once you have your ID number you can then go to the online reference login page (you could bookmark this page for future use). Here you can select the service you require from a drop-down list.
Are these services accessible?
Although the online reference resources don't conform strictly to RNIB See it Right standards, we have ensured that they will work well with most major screen readers and screen magnifying software - available to buy from the online shop.
Online reference from your Public Library
It might be worth contacting your local library to enquire about their range of online services. Usually these can be accessed from outside the library, for instance at home, work or an internet cafe. The Directgov website can help you find your local Public Library.

Mary’s story – Mary joined a Telephone Book Club and meets new people over the phone who share her passion. "I live alone. I’ve always been quite active but suddenly I find that I’m not.
