Research activity
Our aim is to work independently and in partnership promoting the interests of children and adults with serious sight problems in education and employment, through making key and critical contributions to relevant evidence bases.
We have worked with RNIB teams to carry out research and collect statistical information in the following areas:
- education of children and young people up to the age of 16 in mainstream and in specialist education settings
- education and training of young people and adults aged 16 onwards in mainstream and in specialist education settings employment.
How research findings have been used
- To inform and influence policy makers in education and employment.
- To develop RNIB services for blind and partially sighted children and adults and their families.
- To support statutory providers and those who plan services for blind and partially sighted people.
- To support professionals working with blind and partially sighted people in education and employment, to help them improve and develop their services.
- To help students and researchers.
- To inform organisations, such as local charities, which work with and support blind and partially sighted children and adults.

Gemma's story - while at university Gemma volunteered as an events assistant in a charity. Being partially sighted, she faced some challenges working in a paper-based office. "The positive response to me asserting my needs has helped me feel more confident about the future."
