Children’s services
We offer a programme of short courses and conferences for Children’s Services professionals, which cover a wide range of themes including visual conditions, curriculum access, and social inclusion.
Post compulsory education
Our post compulsory education courses help staff working in further and higher education settings to understand and meet the needs of students with sight problems.
We are currently developing specialist Teaching and Learning Support Practitioner courses that will enable people with sight loss to access education and be appropriately supported through education and training.
Technology
Our technology courses support the development needs of professionals using technology with individuals with sight loss. Topics include access technology software, accessible information and using the computer without the mouse.
Partners in Learning: certificate course for teaching assistants
Partners in Learning is a level 3 BTEC Advanced Certificate course for teaching assistants and other support staff working with blind or partially sighted children and young people in educational settings, including those with additional disabilities or complex needs.
The course aims to increase students' understanding of the impact of visual impairment on development and learning, to develop their skills in providing day to day support and to assist them in working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
We are currently piloting a new online/blended study route. The next intake is planned to start from January 2009.
Certificate in Grade 2 English braille
Our Certificate in Grade 2 English braille course teaches participants how to read and write in braille. This is an essential skill for anyone working alongside an individual using braille in an educational context. The course is suitable for teachers, teaching assistants, parents and support workers and is also open to people with sight problems who wish to gain a qualification in this area. It leads to the award of a level 3 BTEC Advanced Certificate.
Apply now for the next intake which starts in October. Closing date for receipt of applications is 16 September.
Brush up your braille
For people already with a working knowledge of grade 2 English braille, our Brush up your braille course will help you improve. It takes the form of a participatory workshop including group discussion, questions and answers, practical exercises and fun activities! New dates for 2008-2009 announced. Book your place now!
