Troubleshooter

I hold in the hash button and my Owasys says it is switching off, but it doesn't – why not?

You need to confirm the "Switch Off Phone" action by pressing the Send Button (that is, the ok or green button).

I had locked my Owasys keypad. Then, when later I pressed and held the star button again to unlock it, the voice said, "unlock keypad", but it still said "Keypad locked" when I tried to use the phone - why?

You need to confirm the "Unlock Keypad" action by pressing the Send Button (that is, the ok or green button).

I compose a message and enter the destination information, but when I choose "Send Now", Owasys gives an error tone and says "Error sending message" - what is wrong?

The most likely reason is that the SMS Centre Number is incorrect or incomplete. Go to Messages, Options, SMS Centre Number, and Owasys will say, "Write Number", and read out the currently stored digits. From this point you can make Owasys repeat the number as many times as you like by quickly pressing and releasing the Information button (extreme top right of all the buttons), changing the speed at which the number is read back by going to Configuration, speech configuration, speed, but you will need to exit the SMS Centre update process to do this, and return to it afterwards. The stored number must exactly match the following, and when you are sure this is the case you must complete the process of correcting the number by quickly pressing the Send key (OK key):-

Vodafone (pay as you go customers): +447785016005

Vodafone (contract customers): +44385016005

Orange: +447973100973

T Mobile: +447958879879

O2 (pay as you go customers): +447802092035

O2 (contract customers): +447802000332

Virgin: Owasys cannot send/receive text messages via this network

Remember that the number must start with a +, which is entered by pressing and holding the zero key. When editing the SMS Centre Number, you can delete one digit at a time by pressing the end button (that is, the red or delete key), or can clear all the digits ready to begin again, by holding that same key until Owasys says "Empty".

Another possible reason for an error in sending SMS messages may be that one or more of the Owasys mailboxes (Unread Messages, Read Messages, etc) is full. To empty one of these mailboxes, open one of the messages that is in it to the point where the text is being spoken, press the send key (that is, the green or ok key), with the scroll key go to "Delete All Messages" and press the Send (the green or ok) button, Owasys will ask you, "Are you sure?", press Send again and the messages in that particular mailbox will be deleted. If messages are not being sent, it is best to empty all the mailboxes one by one, as described.

Why is my Owasys not charging?

It is possible that you have plugged the charger lead into the headphone rather than the charger socket. The charger socket is on the bottom end of the Owasys, the headphone socket is on the right-hand side.

When the Owasys was demonstrated to me it was very loud and I expected to be able to use it comfortably on a table in front of me, but mine is much quieter and I have to hold it to my ear - why is that?

It was demonstrated to you in hands-free mode which, once the phone has started up and found the network, you can switch to by pressing the hands-free button (middle button, top row). You can vary the hands-free or ordinary phone volume with the two small buttons on the left-hand side of the handset.

My Owasys vibrates when I am receiving a call, but doesn't ring - why not?

It has been switched to Silent Mode. To return the handset to Ringing Mode, press and hold the number 5 key, and Owasys will say "Silent mode, silent off".

My Owasys is saying, "Emergency calls only" - why is this?

The most likely reason is that there is a problem with your network, perhaps a temporary fault with a local transmitter/receiver, but the handset will still enable emergency calls to be made via any network it can find.

Can I link the Owasys to my computer so that I can manage/edit/save the phonebook and settings?

No, - the data port on the phone is only used for software updates.

Are there any software updates?

A. No, you have the latest. If there is an update in the future we will let you know about it and the process to follow to get your phone updated.

I need to send my Owasys back to RNIB for repair, will I lose my phonebook contacts and phone number?

If the phone has to be replaced or the software re loaded then yes you will lose all your phonebook contacts - but your Phone book can be transferred to your SIM Card before sending the phone away. In the Phonebook menu there is the option to Copy Phone book to SIM select Send (that is, green button or ok) and you will hear 'phone book copy started. We also recommend that you remove your SIM, and keep it in a safe place, before you send back your phone for repair. You can then copy the details back from the SIM to the phonebook on the replaced or repaired phone.
