Delivering RNIB services

  • £15 pays for an in-depth benefits check to ensure that a blind or partially sighted person is receiving all the help they are entitled to.
  • £38 pays for RNIB to provide timely information about support and equipment to our members to enable them to get the most out of life.
  • £50 covers an annual subsidy for one of our 40,000 subscribers to the Talking Books Service (in addition to the £76 annual subscription).

  • £282 pays for a blind and partially sighted person to join in a weekly telephone befriending group, called Talk and Support, for a year.

Vacation Schemes provide are for children and young people with sight problems. The schemes provide a fun and exciting week to help them develop.

Spending money, improving lives

RNIB spends…

Over £12 million helping young people with sight problems get the best start in life by providing schools, colleges and a national support network for students, parents and education professionals.

Member of staff at RNIB using access technology

Over £24 million helping improve employment opportunities for people of working age with sight problems by:

  • creating technological solutions like talking computers, calculators and dictionaries
  • providing support, advice and practical training
  • working in partnership with other organisations.

Over £16 million helping older people with daily living and leisure activities through:

  • services such as Talk and Support
  • providing information in formats including braille, large print and audio cassette
  • developing practical products such as liquid level indicators for making drinks safely, talking kitchen scales and training to help people live independently.

Over £10 million working to raise public awareness, through campaigning, information provision, influencing and training professional contacts. For example, Eye Test Action Day highlighted the link between smoking and sight loss.

For every pound, RNIB spends 87p directly helping blind and partially sighted people, 11p on raising more vital funds and 2p on administration.

Your stories

Jill's story - Jill lost her sight 12 years ago at the age of 19. “The experience left me feeling isolated. I often felt like my life was pointless." Now, as a presenter on Insight Radio, she uses her experiences to help others. “My prayer is that what we do helps those who are going through sight loss. Even the tiniest piece of information can make a huge difference. If my show can help do that, then my journey has not been in vain.” Jill's full story
