Overview and objectives
This technical workshop highlights "hidden" accessibility problems, often made because web authors don't fully understand how disabled users access websites. Many of the examples aren't specifically mentioned in the current web accessibility guidelines, but help to explain some of them. All have an impact on functional accessibility for disabled users. Some will be introduced as failure points in the forthcoming Web Accessibility Content Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0).
The course will demonstrate the effect of the hidden barriers, cover ways to test for their presence, or absence, in your own website and offer practical solutions to resolve them if they're found.
- Suitable for: web designers, developers and programmers; key stakeholders in the design and build of websites who already have a basic understanding of accessible web design.
- Prerequisites: A sound knowledge of HTML and a basic knowledge of CSS.
Content
Aspects include:
- identifying "hidden" accessibility problems, and highlighting those that are mentioned in WCAG 2.0
- testing websites for hidden barriers
- solving problems caused by hidden barriers.
Benefits
Delegates will:
- learn how some disabled users interact with the web
- understand which coding errors or web authoring practices cause the "hidden" accessibility problems
- be able to check their own websites for these issues
- learn how to solve any problems found on their own websites.
