What do we do?
We provide a specialist rehabilitation service for people who have been diagnosed as having low vision.
This enables people to get the help they need by looking at their everyday needs and difficulties. This service is available to people who have been referred to us by Camden or Islington.
Definition of low vision
Low vision is defined as a sight problem which is not correctable by spectacles. It mainly affects older people.
There are many ways in which people with low vision can be assisted to retain their independence. The Low Vision Centre is an appointment only service, but RNIB can provide useful information and details of other low vision assessment services.
Appointment process
There are three stages to the process:
- Rehab assessment – find out the problems and discuss goals
- Optometric assessment – find the solutions and establishes which magnifying devices and other equipment will be of most help (spectacles, low vision aids, other services)
- Training – use of the equipment can be explained and tried out in a real life situation and how to maintain the equipment (e.g. changing batteries).
Stage 3 may take place at the service user’s home.
Providing information
The Centre provides all its information in large print or on tape.
We also stock RNIB’s wide range of leaflets on all aspects of vision. Anyone referred to the Low Vision Centre can use the leaflets to help them understand their own eye condition.
As the Centre is part of RNIB, we can also direct people to other RNIB services. We may also link people into the statutory Social Services system if that is appropriate.

Jill's story - Jill lost her sight 12 years ago at the age of 19. “The experience left me feeling isolated. I often felt like my life was pointless." Now, as a presenter on Insight Radio, she uses her experiences to help others. “My prayer is that what we do helps those who are going through sight loss. Even the tiniest piece of information can make a huge difference. If my show can help do that, then my journey has not been in vain.” Jill's full story
