Due to the Disability Discrimination Act, service providers are legally obliged to make their services accessible to people with disabilities. Our training will help you understand the needs of blind and partially sighted people and improve the service you offer.

About the course

We tailor our courses to best meet the needs of your organisation, whether from the public, private or voluntary sector. Our training aims to:

• Dispel the myths and stereotypes surrounding sight loss
• Give practical advice on how you can ensure blind and partially sighted people get the best possible service from your organisation
• Enable you to support a blind or partially sighted customer or colleague, for example, greeting and guiding techniques

What does the course cover?

We tailor-make our courses to best meet the needs of your organisation, whether from the public, private or voluntary sector. Possible topics can include:

• barriers in society and practical issues experienced by individuals
• obligations of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
• how to greet and guide a blind person
• working with blind or partially sighted children
• how to make information accessible to blind and partially sighted people
• recruiting / retaining an employee with sight problems.

Who should do the training?

The training is suitable for front-line staff, managers and anyone who would like to offer services which are valued by blind and partially sighted people.

Examples of organisations who have attended our training include: BUPA, Sefton Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police, Warrington Collegiate and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Additional Training – Sensory Awareness (incorporating Visual and Deaf Awareness)

Our Sensory Awareness Day is a unique one-day course, combining Visual and Deaf Awareness training. We deliver this course collaboratively with the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID).

In addition to the Visual Awareness topics listed above, the Deaf Awareness session can also include:

• defining different types and causes of deafness
• communicating in a positive way with people who are deaf or hard of hearing
• basic Sign Language
• support with recruiting/retaining and developing deaf and hard of hearing employees.
