Volunteering

Transcription Officer, Magazines – volunteering role

Summary: Volunteer vacancy available from all regions across the UK.

A selection of magazines

Description

The funded and magazines team produce more than 70 magazines for our blind and partially sighted customers. These range from children’s magazines, TV and radio guides, right through to specialist magazines such as Theological Times. The content is varied and interesting.

We use transformation technology to create an XML file (extensible mark up language document, similar to an HTML). From this we can create accessible magazines in braille, audio, large print and e-text.

Your role will be to produce an XML file for magazines and business work as well as supporting quality measures in place through proof reading. Access to your own PC and Broadband is required, as files will be transferred electronically. Full training and ongoing support and development will be provided as well as software support. You will already be familiar with windows based programmes.

Location

As this is a home-based role opportunities are available across all regions of the UK. However, if you are conveniently located near our RNIB centre at Peterborough, there is opportunity to work from the centre.

Hours

Flexible – although we would be seeking a commitment of about five hours per week

Lindsay's story - Lindsay works for RNIB. She decided to volunteer on children's vacation schemes as an opportunity to see how her work supports blind and partially sighted people. "One of the best parts is watching the children and young people challenge themselves. I really look forward to my volunteering as it is so different from my general work and life."
