Meet Amazon’s Alexa, a voice artificial intelligence (AI) that helps you stay organised, connected, entertained and more. Whether you’re at home or on the go, Alexa is designed to make your life easier.

Amazon and RNIB have been working together for a number of years listening to customers and building features to support the sight loss community. Amazon was proud to participate in RNIB’s World Upside Down campaign, raising awareness of the difficulties of social distancing for blind and partially sighted people during the pandemic.

In December 2020, together we launched Show & Tell, a feature that identifies common household grocery items that are hard to distinguish by touch, such as canned or boxed foods.

January 2021 saw the launch of “Alexa, call the RNIB Helpline”, a feature designed to connect customers to vital services and advice from RNIB.

And, in August 2021, we launched the RNIB Talking Books skill. The RNIB Talking Books service is 86 years old and continues to adapt to the changing landscape of how its users want to read books. This latest innovation means that customers can now instantly access thousands of audio books for free by saying, “Alexa, open RNIB Talking Books”, and then choosing a book, such as “Alexa, find Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”.

Amazon aims to continue its work with RNIB, and the wider sight loss community and is excited to see how Alexa can continue to assist blind and partially sighted people in the future.

RNIB is an incredible organisation that recognises the benefit technology can bring to its community. At Amazon we are proud to headline sponsor the RNIB See Differently Awards 2022, which celebrates the people and organisations dedicated to improving the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

Amazon and RNIB have been working together to bring features and skills such as Alexa Show & Tell, Call the RNIB Helpline and ”Alexa, read my RNIB Letter from Santa“ for children, and adults, to listen to a Christmas message in Santa’s voice. We’re excited to continue working in partnership with this prestigious organisation to look at ways technology could help people with sight loss in the future.
