Trek Ben Nevis: Frequently Asked Questions

How much will it cost?

You pay a £75 registration fee when you sign up and it is non-refundable. We then ask you to commit to £550 fundraising pledge, and 50 per cent of this will need to be sent to RNIB before the event (9 August 2019). If this has not been received you will not be able to go on the trip. This is to ensure we cover our costs and make a reasonable profit for RNIB. The final 50 per cent of your pledge is due six weeks after the trek (20 September 2019).

The £75 registration fee you pay when you sign up goes towards the cost of your trip. We then use £235 of your £550 fundraising pledge to pay for the rest of your costs. So RNIB receive a minimum of £315 per person to continue our vital work.

Our amazing supporters usually raise well above their fundraising pledge and our brilliant events team will be on hand to help you do this, so it’s likely RNIB will receive even more than this.

What’s included in the cost?

The total cost of the trip is £310 and includes:

  • Comprehensive training programme
  • 2 night’s twin room hotel accommodation with private bathroom.
  • Breakfast, lunch and celebration dinner on Saturday.
  • Breakfast on Sunday.
  • Transfers to and from our hotel to the base of Ben Nevis
  • Qualified mountain leaders
  • Qualified first aiders
  • Expert event organisation and delivery
  • Route planning which is considerate to the conservation of the landscape
  • Professional photography and filming

 

What’s not included?

  • Travel to and from accommodation in Fort William 
  • Evening meal on the Friday
  • Personal insurance (e.g. cancellation, accident, health, emergency evacuation and loss, theft of or damage to baggage and personal effects).
  • Personal equipment (e.g. walking boots, rucksack, waterproof jacket and trousers, torch, hat and gloves)

 

What level of fitness is required?

The challenge level is tough, suitable for someone who has a good level of fitness and takes regular exercise. The ascent and descent will take between six to ten hours and no previous mountaineering experience is required. You will be carrying a day pack and may encounter inclement weather conditions, especially in the summit area which even in the summer can be cold and challenging.

A fitness plan will be provided when you sign up and we recommend you follow this plan. However you should always seek professional advice before starting your training. The ideal training for this challenge is, naturally, walking with particular emphasis on building up stamina on ascents and descents. Most training should be part of an ongoing lifestyle, but if this is not the case then you should begin training 2-4 months prior to the challenge and gradually build up as suggested.

Inadequate training will have an impact not just on your chances of completing the challenge, but enjoying it too, and we want you to have the time of your life! We expect everyone to train hard, but understand everyone has different limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace.

We’ve planned this challenge to attract people at all levels of experience and fitness, varying sight conditions and ages. This is not a race, this is a team effort that enables people to achieve their personal goals and earn sponsorship.

 

Who will be leading and managing the trek?

 
We are working with Charity Challenge to deliver this trek, a well-established and experienced company who plan and deliver treks across the UK. Your trek will be led by experienced Charity Challenge leaders and support crew with years’ of experience of leading across the harshest terrains in Britain. 
 
Your safety is Charity Challenge’s highest priority and the trip is designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (e.g. phones, radios), medical kit, and will have access to 24-hour emergency back-up. They are responsible for safety on the trip and will make any changes to the itinerary if necessary. Pre-trip administration, such as medical forms is all done with safety in mind.
 
You will also be supported by RNIB representatives on the trek, who will be there to help ensure you have the best possible experience.
 
 

Can I complete this challenge if I’m blind or partially sighted?

Yes, and we are encouraging blind and partially sighted people to sign up. We will be working closely with our event delivery partners Charity Challenge to carefully plan this trek to take every consideration for blind and partially sighted participants. Plus we are working with past trek participants with sight loss, to implement their recommendations from past experience.

If you require a sighted guide, we recommend you sign up with a friend or family member so you can train and fundraise together. However, if you don’t have someone you can sign up with, then we will be matching people up to ensure anyone who requires a guide has the appropriate support to scale Ben Nevis.

We will be asking everyone who takes part to fundraise, so any sighted guides who sign up will also be asked to meet the minimum fundraising pledge, to ensure we cover our costs and raise as much money for RNIB as possible.

 

What are the arrangements for accommodation?

Accommodation is on a twin-share basis in a hotel. Please tell us if you know somebody else on the trip you would like to share with so we can pair you up. If you don't know anyone else in the group don't worry, we always pair you up with someone of the same gender.

 

What if I have specific dietary requirements?

We provide all meals on the day of the trek, and breakfast on the morning after the trek. If you have specific dietary requirements let us know in advance so we can make arrangements. If your diet is very restricted we recommend you bring extra snacks with you.


What kit will I need?

Personal clothing and equipment is not provided as part of the cost. It is vital you are prepared for all weather conditions and we provide a full kit list on registration. The basic essentials include: day rucksack, waterproof jacket and trousers, walking boots, thick socks, base layer, fleece jacket, warm hat and cap, head torch, water bottle, and sun protection.

 

Are there any age restrictions?

You must be at least sixteen years old to take part. If you’re between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, you will need to be accompanied on the challenge by a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit, although in some cases a signed medical form may be required.

 

Will I need to fill out a medical form?

YYou will be required to complete an online medical questionnaire to ensure you have the support needed to complete the trek safely. Charity Challenge will review your questionnaire and may get in touch to discuss any medical conditions stated. What about insurance?

The trip cost does not cover personal insurance and you will need to arrange personal injury cover yourself.
