Mike Burdon, the President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, tells RNIB Connect Radio's Allan Russell how ophthalmology departments balancing the safety of patients with eye health considerations since the coronavirus epidemic.

Burdon says the primary aim of the response by ophthalmology departments is to balance the safety of patients with the risk of them sustaining significant visual loss over the next three, or maximum six, months.

He explains: "We have significantly reduced our routine follow up of chronic conditions, and focused our attention on those conditions that are likely to cause visual loss over that period. For example, the treatment of wet age-related Macular Degeneration, retinal detachments and uncontrolled glaucoma."
