RNIB Connect Radio is broadcasting a range of special shows on 8 May to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
Interviews with Blind Veterans UK chief executive Major General (Rtd) Nick Caplin CB and World War Two veterans - including former servicewomen as well as a staff at the code-breaking centre Bletchley Park - will form part of the programming, along with a special Sunset Melodies music show, presented by Gary Moritz.
Gary’s show will recall the events leading up to VE day, accompanied by the music that was important during those pivotal moments in history.
Women of the WAAF is a special show commemorating two remarkable women, Brenda Deacy and Eileen Younghusband, who talk about their experiences as servicewomen during World War Two and how they both dealt with their sight loss later in life.
In his interview, Nick Caplin will talk about Blind Veterans’ activity around the anniversary and how it will mark the VE Day celebrations by bringing together, virtually, 75 World War Two blind veterans on the day.
Margaret Wilson, who worked at Bletchley Park during the war, talks in interview with RNIB Connect Radio’s Allan Russell about the relief she felt on VE Day itself. “You knew you wouldn’t be bombed anymore,” she explains, having experienced bombing in Birmingham at the time.
“VE Day means so much to our listeners, and to us all, that we think this look back in interviews, words and music will revive memories across the day. It will also remind those of us who weren’t part of World War Two – and owe so much to that generation – how grateful we should be for their efforts and their sacrifice,” says Martin Wingfield, head of brand and marketing at RNIB.
