Parent Pathways

Parent Pathways is a free and informal series of online sessions for parents and carers whose child has recently been diagnosed with vision impairment, or who want to find out more about a particular topic.

Parent Pathways is part of our Living Well with Sight Loss series and is designed to give you the space to learn about and discuss some of the important questions that you might have about raising a child who is blind or partially sighted. It is open to parents or carers of children aged from birth to 25 years old.

To book on please visit our Course Calendar or read below for further details.

Join a small group of parents for a series of online sessions with two of our Family Support Officers. You’ll receive information and advice on a range of topics and will have the chance to meet and share experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Parent Pathways offers the chance to find out about:

  • early support around your child’s diagnosis
  • play and social interaction
  • benefits and financial support services
  • your child’s education and accessing specialist support.

An accompanying Parent Pack workbook is available to record any useful information from the different sessions.

You’ll also be offered the opportunity for a one-to-one discussion with your local RNIB Family Support Officer to discuss your individual situation and any additional support you might need.

Course duration and structure

Sessions take place on Microsoft Teams via online video call and last up to 90 minutes.

Our introductory course, called First Steps, takes place over two consecutive weeks. This is aimed at parents who are going through the process of, or have just received, a diagnosis of vision impairment for their child.

During the First Steps sessions, parents are given the opportunity to talk to and share experiences with other families.

We also offer one-off ‘Focus on…’ sessions which provide information and advice on specific topics. These include:

  • Focus on Family Finances
  • Focus on Play and Social Development
  • Focus on Education
