We’ve got great news, Arriva North East have launched a new Sapphire Bus which includes audio-visual announcements!

On 29 July, campaigners from Northumberland and Newcastle welcomed the new buses which will run on route X21 from Newcastle to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

Northumberland campaigner Joyce Anderson says: “Having audio announcements on the bus is so helpful as it means I don’t have to worry about knowing where to get off. I hope they will be introduced on more routes in the future.”

Lucy Dixon, Regional Campaigns Officer for the North East, says: “Local bus travel is a lifeline, providing an important means of transport. Our Stop for me, Speak to me campaign aims to remove the barriers that prevent blind and partially sighted people using buses. Audio announcements are one part of that but improved driver training is also important. We are delighted at the positive and enthusiastic response from Arriva North East to our campaign.”

Arriva North East has already launched the Sapphire Bus with audio-visual announcements on route 7 from Durham to Darlington and is planning to roll the buses out to other routes in the region later this year.
